We’re 2.8 million strong—2 million girls and 800,000 adults who believe girls can change the world. It began over 100 years ago with one woman, Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low, who believed in the power of every girl. She organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, and every year since, we’ve made her vision a reality, helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents. Today, as yesterday, we continue the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. We’re the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs for girls from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to do something amazing.
Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana was formed in July 1986. As of January 1, 2013, there are over 57 Habitat homes located in Lake County, Indiana. Building on donated land, with donated funds and constructed with volunteer labor, our mission is to provide affordable housing opportunities to those in need. The ReStore opened in March 2005 at 6114 W. Ridge Road in Gary and will help to make the above and future building projects possible. There are currently Habitat ReStores throughout the United States. A Habitat ReStore is a retail outlet recycling overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials, appliances and gently used home furnishings donated by manufacturers, store contractors and individuals. These donated items are sold at a fraction of normal prices to the public. All revenue from sales goes to the local affiliate in support of its building program.
